Gladiators in 500 BC made a living out of entertaining ancient Romans with masterfully orchestrated fights. They offered spectators an example of martial ethics and, in fighting or dying well, they could inspire admiration and popular acclaim. Today, most halls of fame present a more humane take on this once deathly competition. American Theater Hall of Fame, Dance Music Hall of Fame, and American National Business Hall of Fame are among them.
